Soft, fluffy authentic British crumpets perfect for toasting and spreading with butter.
The French call them "British pancakes". Which may be hard to accept as a precise definition. But it's an elegant way of explaining it to someone who's never had them before.
Whether you prefer them savoury, or sweet, they're an absolute classic.

Early crumpets originated in the Middle Ages as thin, hard pancake-like flatbreads cooked on a griddle (bakestone). The name likely comes from the Old English crompid, meaning "bent" or "curled up," referring to how they buckled on the heat.
The soft, thick, hole-filled crumpet we eat today was invented during the Victorian era. Bakers began adding baking powder to yeast batter, which released carbon dioxide bubbles as it cooked on a griddle, creating the classic spongy top that holds melted butter.
